When Michael Jordan retired from basketball and decided to play baseball, we let him get away with it. When he decided to return to basketball, he was welcomed with wide arms. He retired the number 45 and returned as 23, we let him get away with it. He gave us the Jumpman, we asked how high and we forked out money for the pricey apparel. He returned to own and play with the wizards, this time round the results left a lot to be desired about his so so performance, but he still got away with it. Charles Barkley is definitely one of the most revered re-bounders in basketball, when he spat on a fan, we let him get away with it. When he decided to ran for governor of Alabama and decided against it, we let him get away with it. When he admitted blowing 2.5million in less than six hours during a gambling fit, we also let him get away with it. Not too long ago he was caught with a hooker as he admitted anticipating a blow-job, we let him and his loud mouth back on TNT, where he is a sports analyst. When Magic Johnson’s heated dispute with the then Lakers coach,Westhead, resulted in the coach’s termination, we let him get away with it. The old three got away with it all.

Lebron James makes a strategic decision to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in playing for the Miami Heat, the ‘old three’ have something to say- the same thing. They not only disapprove of his decision but stop short of calling him a traitor. They also seem to know what they would have done. They all say they would have wanted to play against those rivals versus play with them.

Lebron is a free agent, this means he is a player whose contract with a team has expired and who is as a result eligible to sign with another club or franchise as he chooses. OH-HI-OH got the rest of the states thinking that he was free to choose as long as he chose them. The avenue he chose to present his decision might be questionable but still, it was his decision. The game of basketball needs an injection of excitement. The Lakers seem to be indomitable. The status quo just won’t make the cut. I share the sentiments of former Bull Chet Walker, when he said ‘James is a genius for what he engineered with Wade and Bosh, for the first time in league history, players themselves, not an owner or general manager, put together a championship team’. This is the striking difference between this new generation and the old generation. The older three only saw themselves as rivals in the system, while the new generation see themselves as teammates that rewrite and change the system. Working as individuals ignores the fact that people working together are the only viable solution to any social problem. The system has used divide and conquer techniques, while this new generation flipped the script to unite and conquer the system.

If in an office the employees decided to team up, verses work against each other to demand better wages and working conditions from their managers or citizens decide to come together and hold leaders accountable for making their countries better, then maybe Jordan, Barkley and Magic would let Lebron be. He hasn’t retired thrice, or spat on a fan. He just made a decision, a brilliant one.
